BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Gardena Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT-compatible gate motor replacements across Gardena, with most swaps completed for between $650 and $1,450 installed, depending on the model and whether the control board rides along. A failed BFT motor usually announces itself the same way in every Gardena neighborhood: the gate groans, stutters halfway, or simply sits still while the control board clicks and the warning light blinks. Most owners discover the failure when the gate refuses to open on a Monday morning, and by then the armature or the capacitor has already given out after years of ocean-adjacent air and daily cycles.

Victor Salinas grew up in the Norwood Park neighborhood of Gardena, where half the block had a sliding driveway gate and the other half wished they did. In the decades since, he has replaced enough BFT motors to know exactly which ones fail, why they fail, and what belongs in their place. This page is for the homeowner who wants the right part matched to the right model, priced honestly, and installed so it stays fixed.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has sold several distinct motor families over the years, and the replacement part is never universal. The two most common in Gardena driveways are the sliding-gate units from the DEIMOS and IGEA lines and the swing-arm and in-ground operators from the PHOBOS, KUSTOS, and SUB series. Each uses a different motor assembly, and the mounting pattern differs by generation, so a DEIMOS BT motor will not simply bolt into an older DEIMOS A housing without an adapter plate.

Before calling, open the plastic cover and look for the silver BFT data tag. It carries the model name, the voltage (most Gardena homes run 115V, but some older estate gates on the city’s west side still use 230V), and a serial number that starts with the production year. If the tag is sun-faded beyond reading, measure the motor body length: the 24V DEIMOS motors run about 8.5 inches, while the 115V units push past 11. We stock OEM BFT motors for current DEIMOS, IGEA, and PHOBOS models and keep quality aftermarket equivalents on the truck for discontinued series where BFT no longer supplies parts. The aftermarket units we install carry the same duty-cycle rating as the original, and we state plainly which one you are getting and why.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: BFT changed the encoder wiring on the DEIMOS series around 2016. A motor sold as “DEIMOS-compatible” may spin but will not communicate with an older control board unless it carries the matching feedback connector. We carry both connector versions on the truck specifically because of this.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • The gate starts and then stops midway, every time. This is usually the motor’s thermal overload kicking in because the windings are degrading and drawing more current than the board allows. The motor will run again once it cools, which is why the problem gets worse as the day warms up.
  • A loud hum with no movement. The start capacitor has failed. The motor receives power but cannot build the rotational kick to move the gate’s mass. In Gardena’s summer heat, capacitors on south-facing operators fail noticeably faster than shaded ones.
  • The gate moves slower than it did last year. Worn internal bearings and hardened gear grease add mechanical drag. A BFT motor fighting its own gearbox pulls more current and eventually trips the board or burns the windings.
  • Intermittent operation that comes and goes. Internal brush wear in the DC motor creates dead spots on the commutator. The gate works when the armature lands on a good segment and stalls when it does not.
  • The control board shows an error code but the gate moves manually. The board is often blamed first. In many Gardena call-outs, the board is fine and the motor is drawing outside its expected range, which triggers a fault before the motor fully dies.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A BFT gate motor replacement in Gardena typically runs between $650 and $1,450 installed. The range comes down to three things: which motor family you have, whether it is a 24V or 115V unit, and whether the control board survived the motor’s death. Here is the honest breakdown:

  • DEIMOS / IGEA sliding-gate motor (115V): $750-$1,150 installed
  • DEIMOS / IGEA sliding-gate motor (24V): $680-$950 installed
  • PHOBOS swing-arm motor: $900-$1,450 installed
  • KUSTOS / SUB in-ground motor: $1,100-$1,600 installed, depending on excavation access
  • Control board replacement, if needed: $250-$450 added to the motor quote

Every quote includes the motor, removal of the old unit, mounting and alignment, travel-limit setup, force adjustment, and a full cycle test. The price is quoted and agreed before we turn a single bolt, so the bill matches the number you approved. Every BFT replacement we install is covered by our written 90-Day Done Right Promise, and we will be there when we say.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things a homeowner can safely check before calling. Confirm the breaker is on, look for a tripped GFCI at the outlet, and check whether the manual release allows the gate to move by hand. If the gate moves freely by hand, the problem is in the motor or the board, not the gate itself. That is useful information to have when you call.

What we do not recommend is opening the motor housing and attempting a swap without the correct wiring diagram. BFT motors carry live 115V or 230V at the terminal block even when the operator is switched off at the cover switch. The capacitor holds a charge long after power is cut, and a wrong connection at the encoder plug can damage a good control board. We complete most BFT motor replacements in a single visit, and a live person answers our phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call (916) 398-2696 and we will get you sorted without the guesswork.
